WTF Response

Post by slk123 » July 8th, 2018, 8:58 am

Hello everyone! I know I've not posted much in sometime. I guess I was too much in denial about my heart to want to read about what happens with us. Oh well, life goes on, right? Suck it up buttercup!

As some of you know, I have 5 children. They are now 6, 9, 11, 13, 14. I put them all in karate between the ages of 3 and 5. All but 1 is still doing it. There are 9 belts in our club, the 11th being the black belt. It's actually the first belt but for explanation purposes, I'll say it's the 11th belt. The 6 year old is on her 4th belt; the 9 year old is on her 7th belt, the 11 year old is on his 8th belt, the 13 year old made it to her 7th belt then decided to go into gymnastics, and my 14 year old, a girl, has been a black belt for a year now and tried out for the USA team the past 2 years. To qualify for the team you need to place in the top 4 at Nationals. She placed 5th both years. Well, this year she has decided to give it another try, so Nationals takes place this coming week. She and I will fly to Reno, Nevada (why a child's event is being held in a casino state is beyond me, but it is) and she'll compete on Saturday, July 14. My other children usually go to Nationals, too, but we usually drive. Driving to Reno is not really an option this year so the others will be staying home. They are both happy and sad they won't be going, but I know they'll make the most of it and have lots of fun at home.

So far this summer has been all about karate training with a day of gymnastics for the one who quit karate. We've been getting up at the crack of dawn, driving to karate training, going back home to take naps and then driving to karate classes at night. I'm happy the training is over but now getting really nervous as the competition is right around the corner. She is ready! I haven't seen her look so good!

In karate, we compete in kata and kumite. Kata is a series of techniques and the ones who do it the best are the winners. Kumite is the fighting. It's regulated so it's not an all out do or die kind of thing. My daughter competes in kumite. In the past she has almost broken her foot, her nose, her jaw, and her ribs. Poor thing at 14 has already been through the ringer, but she chooses to continue going back and has improved greatly. She is really excited for this year's competition. I'm really excited for her, too, and am hoping she can dodge any kind of serious injury. I don't know how I'm going to handle it if she continues to get injured like she has in the past. Waiting in the stands holding my breath to see if she stands up again is not what I really want to do. But I do it for her.

IF she makes the team this year, she qualifies for the Panamerican Championships which are going to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil at the end of August. I'll keep you posted on how she does. I'm attaching a photo from a couple years ago. I don't have a new one of them all in their gis. I guess that's something I need to work on.

Wish us luck!!!

wow.......congratulations stacey i know how proud you are of these amazing kiddies.. and honestly it doesnt surprise me how well they are all doing from the posts and videos on facebook its clear how competitive they are always out doing something with them ive no idea where you drum up the energy you have from and then push it to do the stuff you do.....the kids get their determination from their mother lol..

good luck in Vagas, yes seems an odd place to have a kids event but you know your going to love it...and hey with this heat wave were all having its more sensible to fly than drive..

looking forward to seeing the winner (your girl) plastered all over facebook.....good luck.....hugs..

Reminds me of my childhood...surprised? That's right, my dad frequently used his brown belt on me. He was a lightweight, Mom used her black belt and I think I still have marks on my behind.

5 kids huh...that explains a lot. You should have taken up golf, less stress on the heart golf2
