I'm tired...anybody got any ideas?

Post by ROBO Pop » March 27th, 2018, 10:26 am

Haven't slept an entire night in a week and it's catching up. My breathing has become a real problem, especially at bed time. I fall asleep but wake in the night panicked, feeling like I'm suffocating, and it ain't my wife's doing with the ole pillow trick for a change. The noise from each breath alone is enough to wake an SCA patient.

Each breath leaves me gasping and the sound of gurgling, wheezing, and snap crackle popping like a boiling pot is enough to keep me awake. I gasp and struggle but don't seem to be able to get enough oxygen into my lungs to help. My sputum is a frothy red speckled mess but when I finally eject some I do breath easier, however it's a struggle to get it out.

I've tried the ole propped up head with a wedgie to no avail so I sit in the living room, so as not to awaken my bride, in the dark gasping for each breath, and while I might doze, as my head falls I startle awake and my misery becomes more pronounced.

Any suggestions or ideas?

What are you waiting for? Take a sample of what you're coughing up and get thee to a nunnery! (Sorry, couldn't resist)

You need to at least get to an urgent care unit that can refer you to a specialist (pulmonologist?) right away.

I'm sorry you are struggling with this and that you aren't getting the rest you need. I second Ron's suggestion. At least get it checked out. Maybe just another heart failure symptom most of us will ultimately have to accept, but maybe something treatable. If you already have and you are just looking for suggestions to live with it, you might try something that I used to do when my daughter had a lot of lung/asthma/pneumonia issues. Before bedtime, lay with your body inclined with head lower than chest. Have your bride beat you about the back and get as much as possible out before you go to bed. That could be a win win for both of you.

I hope you get some relief soon.

sorry. This is typical end stage of CHF and to be expected. No need to run to a dr. Like right this minute, I am not physically exerting but can barely breathe. I was hoping someone might know of a trick or two which might help alleviate the annoyance, for example sometimes a coca cola will help break up the sludge and allow you to rid yourself of it, just hasn't been working of late. Anyway last time I went to the convent they informed me when they say nun they mean none... lmao4dx

Sleep at, at least 30 degree angle, or in a recliner. No sleep is the worst.

I would also consider a sleep study and I would start that avenue now. I have been sleeping with a CPAP machine for the last 18 years, luckily my husband does too and we dont leave home without them -- we travel the world with them.... Africa will be a challenge in June!
Ill let you know how I sleep! lol

Time to face it. You're already pretty old and it's doubtful you'll be contributing much more to society in the future. Give in to the dark side, stop trying to fight the inevitable.

You do need to sleep upright almost, but I am sure you know that.

I am concerned about the blood in your sputum. I use Ventolin and also a preventer daily, Spiriva, both puffer sprays if I get the congestion. Also, it sounds like fluid overload, how about an increase in your diuretic. There is no need for you to put up with these symptoms, it may be end stage Heart Failure, but there is no need for you to be uncomfortable.

If you can't put these meds into place yourself, another visit to your cardiologist to get the required stuff, is of course necessary. You do not need to suffer, and also you can get a pill to put you off to sleep. That is also essential to your quality of life.

Thinking of you my friend, please do something to make yourself more comfortable, you could be like this for a long time, better to get relief now, before it deteriorates. Also I see there has been no change really in the weather over there, so you have come out of a pretty depressing winter and have not got the relief of Spring yet, so please be proactive and seek the necessary relief you need.

I have a referral for a chest x-ray and will likely go tomorrow morning. They suspect I may have pneumonia again. and yes Virginia, I did get the shot. Hope they're wrong. The last go round was a PIA

And sleep.

Good question! And in Robo's honor, I'll start collecting people's telescopes and cameras since they can't take them with them and they never truly become obsolete. I've heard that even Polaroids are coming back.

They suspect I may have pneumonia again.
Just how does a closet recluse contract pneumonia AGAIN? Don't you have to interact with other humans to get the bug? Boy you're starting to give sick people a bad name.

I was able to get a set of x-rays yesterday afternoon but the Cardiologist won't see them until Tuesday due to the holiday (good Friday). The Tech wouldn't share anything, so I wait.

Funny you should bring that painting up Suzanne. I'm about 3/4 finished but Just a few minutes ago I decided it was a mistake to tackle it with watercolor and am going to start over and do it in oils. I did do a portrait of both the Cardio and NP and getting ready to frame them. I'd attach photos but it would appear when the site was changed so was the method of attaching photos in a thread.
